LUCID DREAMING
What is Lucid Dreaming?
Lucid Dreaming is simply being aware that you are dreaming whilst you are dreaming. This usually occurs when the dreamer realizes that what they are experiencing is a dream not physical reality.
There has been much written about Lucid Dreaming over the past two decades. It was at that time that Stephen LaBerge, Ph.D set the stage for his breakthrough in lucid dreaming research, whilst gaining his Ph.D in Psychophysiology at Stanford University. He firmly believed that lucid dreaming could be extremely beneficial to humantiy and in 1987 he founded the Lucidity Institute.
The Institute's mission is "to advance research on the nature and potentials of consciousness and to apply the results of this research to the enhancement of human health and well-being".
Lucid Dreams are described by many as being exciting and even spiritual and that once experienced their lives have been changed.
Although clear and consistent knowledge is difficult to find among the many interpretations of the experience — especially considering its highly subjective nature — the validity of lucid dreaming as a scientifically verified phenomenon is well-established.
In learning how to "Lucid Dream" you are taken through a number of steps that will assist you in experiencing lucid dreams. These include "Reality Testing". Some of the practices used are:
- Reading something, looking away, then reading it again. Another example is to
look at your watch, remember the time, look away then look back. Observers have found that, in a dream, the text or time will often have changed.
- Press a finger into your body (leg or arm), as matter is usually plastic in the dream state and does not resist change, the finger will usually penetrate the dream body with little resistance and no pain.
- Hold you nose and see if you can still breath.
There are many more and you can read about them in the book Lucid Dreaming. This book covers pretty well everything you would need to know to get you started with your Lucid Dreaming experience.
